White On Black

Nathan discovered that I had bought a new white gel pen yesterday and asked if he could draw with it. At first, I was going to say no, but then thought I should let him use it because, hey, I buy these things to be used, right? I'm trying to shake my hoarding ways.

I may have reminded him not to waste my pen, to which he replied, "I'm not going to waste it, I'm just going to draw with it." I'm not sure why I thought he would waste in the first place. It's not like he has a habit of mindlessly scribbling all over a page until the pen runs dry.

So I cut up some of my black card stock I had leftover from my mini album pages (See? Not hoarding!) and left him to it.

Moments later, he came back to me with this:

"iLOVEYOU"

When he finished the picture, he accidentally smudged it because I forgot to warn him that this ink doesn't dry as quickly as his usual pens/markers. However, if you look closely you can see that I'm saying "hi". Also, that little cross-like shape at the bottom is my hand, waving.

I was so touched by this, I asked if Nathan would draw one for Andrew as well. So he did.

"ILOVEYOUto"

This one depicts Andrew and Nathan wrestling - one of their new favourite activities. Nathan explained that this one says "to" because he drew mine first, and then this one was next, so he had to write "too".

There was one more little square left so Nathan asked if he could draw a picture for himself as well. Of course, I said he could.

"This is ME"

This one's pretty self-explanatory. Not sure why his s's are backwards here.

After a long while, he came back and decided that Caleb should have one as well so I cut a new piece of card stock for him to draw on.

I didn't see this one until after the boys had gone to bed last night and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

"THISISMYBRATHR"

This really tugs at the heartstrings, doesn't it? And Nathan drew Caleb saying "up" because Caleb's been saying "up" for the past week or so. We've decided that's his first word.

I really love Nathan's illustrations of us, and I'm so glad I decided to share my white gel pen.

  1. How totally sweet!!
I have been trying to "share" my stash with the kids, too.
It's so hard sometimes because then you go to use something and it's gone. But moments like that make it worth it don't they? :)
