Spotted: Custom Tee

A couple months ago, I was commissioned to make a custom t-shirt for one of Nathan's friends.

This past weekend when we went to his birthday party, it made me smile to see him wearing that shirt! His mom told me he wore it to school on Friday as well.

Yay for happy customers!

There's still a few shirts available in the shop. Or if you're interested in customizing a tee, contact me!

Bean2Bead Recap

A little while ago, my friend Corrine asked if I'd like to share a stall with her at one of the local lifestyle markets. My first reaction was "Yes!" but I had to hold myself back and think - I didn't want to get in over my head. She had asked me at the end of October.

However, with Andrew studying and writing exams, I didn't make my decision to go ahead with it until  a month later, towards the end of November. By then, I had two weeks to pull everything together.

I spent a week, literally from the moment I woke up until the moment I forced myself to sleep, sketching up designs and making the shirts.

I'm quite proud with how much sewing was accomplished over that one week.

I'm so grateful that Andrew was so supportive these past two weeks, taking the boys to school, driving them to their lessons, getting food on the table. He took over every little thing I normally do so I could focus all my time and energy on this project.

Andrew even worked his computer magic, took my signature and designed some awesome-looking business cards, labels and tags. They looked fantastic and so professional.

I'm so thankful for all the crafty supplies I have on hand. It sure made putting these things together in such a short time so much easier.

Tagging along with Corrine and getting to know the vendor side of markets was a good experience for me. It forced me to take this whole project seriously and I learned so much over the two weeks of preparation leading up to the event as well.

I knew that starting up and running a small handmade business would be a lot of work and long hours but I needed to feel it to understand what that really meant.

The event itself went well. The organizers had to change the market date and venue multiple times, so I wasn't sure what that would mean in terms of turn-out. On top of that, the weather was insanely hot on Sunday and we were lucky to have an indoor booth, right by the open garage door so at least we got the occasional breeze to cool us down. If I hadn't committed to being there, I definitely would not have left the house that day so I can't blame people for not wanting to come out.

Overall, it was a very slow day but I did get a lot of good, positive feedback. Of course, it did help to be there with friends, and to have some familiar faces show up to give me some support and encouragement.

At this point, I'm not sure if I'll continue doing markets just because it does eat up a big chunk of our weekend and right now for our family, it's more important for us to spend that time together.

That being said, I have set up a little online shop with a few of my ready-made shirts available. I'll also be taking custom orders as well, so if you're interested, please contact me!

Last Minute Panda Costume

It's become a tradition in the Tsoi household for us to come up with a Halloween costume idea at the very last minute, then have me stay up late the night before Halloween, frantically trying to put the costume together.

It started off with Nathan's ghost costume.

Then, there was Andrew's Phantom of the Opera costume.

This year, it was Caleb's turn. I actually wanted to reuse Nathan's monkey costume from his first Halloween but of course we left that back in Toronto so obviously that wasn't going to happen.

It took me a little while but I finally decided to dress Caleb up as a panda.

Now that I had the idea, I just had to figure out how to make the costume.

This was my thought process:
Black outfit with white tummy -- easy but ugly. Plus it's not realistic; pandas have white bums. No.

Black outfit with white wrapped around mid-section and bum -- also easy but ugly. It has to look like a proper costume, not some poorly dressed kid. No.

Sew a shirt with black arms and white belly, pants with white bum and black legs -- not so easy but ugly. Plus, it would look like a cheap effort. No

So really, that left only one option: a full body suit with the black and white in the right places.

By the time I had this all figured out, it was dinner time, the night before Halloween.

Let me just say I have never made anything wearable before. I have made blankets, tablecloths and pillow cases. These are all things that require sewing only straight lines, and are left at home, never to be seen by the public eye. So starting on this project, I knew one thing: this could either turn out really awesome, or really awful. Either way, it was going to be hard work.

The hat was easy enough to make. I loosely followed this tutorial, replacing the horns with rounded ears and omitting the eyes. I had it mostly completed by the time Caleb finished his shower, so we tried it on for size.

I was so excited that it fit, and that he liked wearing it.

Then, the hard part began.

Since Caleb was now in bed, I had to rely on several pieces of his clothing to guess his size and shape - not that I would've known how to sew something using his measurements anyway.

I traced the outlines of his clothes and left a little space for seam allowance. Looking back, I should have made the costume quite a bit bigger to account for the lack of stretch in the material I used.

Reading through several tutorials taught me how to make a pattern using existing clothing. I felt pretty good drawing my own pattern. I was taking my sewing skills to a whole new level. I still had no idea if this would turn out right, though.

I drew a curve through my t-shirt pattern where the tummy would be and cut it off. I was starting from the top and going down, so the only parts I needed black were the arms and the top part of his torso.

I ended up having to sew the arms on after attaching the top part of the torso to the tummy because on its own, it didn't have enough stability. The only problem now was figuring out how Caleb would actually get into the suit.

At that point, it was around 2am and I was going to call it a night - figure the rest out in the morning. But, I was starving so I had Andrew make me a tea and croissant.

With a bit of food and a bit of determination, I was able to finish off most of the suit before heading to bed. I ended up having to rip open the bottom of the suit (so Caleb would be able to get in) and attaching the legs from there.

In the morning, all that was left to do was attach the snaps inside the legs...

Sew on a cute little tail and let Caleb try the whole thing on for size.

And that, my friends, is how you design and make a panda costume from start to finish in less than 24 hours!

Ninja Themed Gift Set

As promised, here's the ninja themed gift we gave to Nathan's friend who turned 5 recently!

Ninja face card + ninja star reverse appliqué t-shirt* = awesome gift for a little ninja

*I must mention that Andrew helped me design the template for this ninja star.

B+W Chevron Pillow

Ever since moving into this house, I have been obsessed with pillows and cushions.

Everywhere I go, I find myself looking at cushions even though we don't really need them seeing as how we don't sit on our couch that often due to our lack of a tv. But I love them anyway.

A while ago, I found a red chevron-patterned cushion at Target. I loved the pattern, but not the colour. Nor did I like the green one. Or the blue one.

I left empty handed but my head was full of ideas.

Inspired by Elise's headboard, I used this tutorial and this tutorial, to make my own black and white chevron pattern using some more fabric I picked up from Ikea.

Here's the finished pillow cover. It's a little bigger than I wanted it to be, but the chevrons were perfectly centred and I really didn't want to re-cut and sew. So I left it.

I'm okay with the final product. Caleb doesn't mind it too much, either.

Unfinished Projects

On Sunday, Andrew was kind enough to take both the boys out to a birthday party while I stayed home to make a few things.

After I had made the sunburst pillow months ago, I wanted to make a black and white chevron pillow case to finish off the rainbow I had going on my couch.

Then, life got busy and I never got around to doing it. Finally I asked Andrew if he would mind giving me a little bit of time to get it done.

So I pulled out my material.

Except I decided to make a ruffled pillow case first. I saw one not too long ago and thought we could use something a little more girly in the house. Plus, I'm trying to use up my jersey fabric.

I went at it and things were going well until I cut the material in the wrong direction. I had no choice but to put this project on hold until I could get more material because I could not stand that the ruffles didn't look as neat as my first ones.

Onto the next (read: original) project.

I had been a little hesitant with this one because it involved cutting striped material in different directions. I'm a little bit of a perfectionist and I wasn't sure if I could pull off the 45degree cuts perfectly.

Well, I did it. But all my diagonals were going the same way, instead of opposite ways. And I didn't have enough fabric to cut more strips going the opposite direction.

So that project had to be put on hold, too.

The thing is I'm the kind of person that has to finish projects quickly. I can't let things sit around for too long, or I'll lose interest and I'll never finish. But I have been learning to be more patient with my projects because I've come to accept that chances are, I won't be able to finish any significant project in one sitting. It's just not possible with two boys to look after and a house to run. It's still frustrating, but I get over it quicker.

Slightly annoyed with myself for wasting my night off, I moved onto one final project.

I may not be completely caught up with Project Life yet but I can always count on PL to give me mini projects that I can finish in one sitting.

More on Project Life coming later this week.

6 Shirt

I got up before the sun Saturday morning and realized that I had fallen asleep before I got the chance to make Nathan's birthday shirt.

So I snuck out of bed and quickly threw together a tie shirt.

Then, as I was finishing, I realized that I had made the exact same shirt for one of Nathan's friends who was coming to the party and it was entirely possible that he would be wearing that shirt. And we couldn't possibly have two people wearing the exact same handmade shirt to the party now, could we?

No way.

With time ticking away, I decided the only thing to do was make another shirt.

By then, Nathan had gotten up so I asked him to choose fabric and thread colours for me (the two things that take more time in my process than the actual sewing itself).

Luckily, he's a pretty quick decision-maker so I was back to sewing in no time.

And here's the shirt Nathan ended up wearing to his bowling party.

I think it'll make another appearance at his birthday party in Toronto!

Yellow Burst Cushion

It's been rainy and gloomy for the past two weeks.

I don't even remember what the sun looks like anymore.

All this miserable weather is making the fact that we can't find a suitable entrance table for our place even more depressing, so when I saw some yellow fabric at Ikea, I snatched it up right away. We needed something to brighten up our home.

For my first make-our-rental-homier project, I made a cushion.

I used this tutorial as a guideline and made a few alterations of my own.

I stitched two lines across the opening edges to reinforce it. I like the look of two lines; it looks more finished to me.

I purposely made the case a little smaller than it should be so that the pillow would look puffier and not saggy like some of the cheaper Ikea pillows. Right now, it's a little over-puffy but I'm hoping that with the boys jumping on them and sitting on them, it'll flatten it out a little.

And here it is with my other brightly-coloured cushions. They're not all the same size, but I'm okay with that.

Christmas Stockings and a Birthday Dinner

I've never done Christmas stockings before but seeing as how Christmas will be different this year, I thought it might be a nice time to add a new family tradition to our Christmas celebrations.

I got this idea in my head that I would make some Christmas stockings for the boys, and after purchasing some red fabric this afternoon, I got to work.

Coming up with a general pattern was easy, but mentally piecing the pieces together in my head took a little more work. Of course, my thoughts were divided between the Christmas stockings and preparing for having guests over for dinner.

So after having a nice birthday dinner for Andrew with a couple of our friends, followed by a nice catch-up and watching my baby boy take his first three baby steps all by himself*, we filled our tummies with this gorgeous (and oh-so-rich) cake.

Then, I finished the first Christmas stocking.

It didn't turn out as perfect as I hoped it would but it's pretty functional for my first one. Might have to tweak my pattern a little before I make the next one(s).

*I'm super distraught that we didn't catch his first steps on video, but Andrew's trying to convince me to just enjoy the fact that I got to witness this momentous occasion with my own two eyes and just wait for his next steps to make a video. Sigh.

ER Week 1 Round Up

I was supposed to mail out this t-shirt, along with the tie t-shirt I made to our friends back in Canada this week but I never got around to doing it because all week, Caleb's been super clingy.

But I can't really blame him because the poor dude's got 6 teeth coming in all at once. Teething is so hard for him, and it makes him so sad. Plus, for the past couple days he's had this mysterious fever, but thank goodness it seems to be done now.

He was a super trooper and made it through a cupcake decorating class I sat in on yesterday with a mom from Nathan's class. Sadly, my cupcake ended up on the floor in front of our elevator (booooo!) but at least I had fun decorating it. I could spend an entire afternoon piping frosting!

And last, but not least, a selfie of Nathan. It's been a while since he's taken photos of himself with my phone, so this was a pleasant surprise. He even posted this one to Instagram!

Bunch of Onesies

More than half of the ladies in the Friday morning Bible study I go to are pregnant or recently had a baby. Almost makes me want to have another one.

Almost.

Anyway, it's their tradition to fill a basket with gifts for the mom and baby, so I decided to make a customized onesie for each of the new babies.

When I bought the onesies, I only knew the gender of one of the babies, hence the yellow onsies.

Waiting until the baby's born to find out its gender seems to be the current trend here, or at least with this circle of moms.

Crafting Binge

Four weeks ago, I signed up to do Amy Tan's The Good Life online class to learn some new techniques and push myself to be more creative, more consistently.

I started off strong and churned out all sorts of reverse appliqué goodies: a pouch, a sewing machine cover, a t-shirt or two.

Then, towards the middle of the class, I slowed down a little because the projects required a bit more self-reflection and effort. I chugged along, making sure to at least try each of the techniques out if I could.

Yesterday was the last day of the class and wanting to finish strong, I spent the night completing a few more projects to share in the class gallery. Here's what I made:

Our friends just had a baby boy, and the father happens to be a photographer so I thought this onesie would be quite fitting.

I was playing around with some watercolours and a straw with Nathan over the weekend, and I thought I'd make a sign for my side of the computer room (aka. the disaster area).

And finally, a mini travel journal for our trip home next year.

This was the first time I used my sewing machine on paper and because I used so many sheets of thick paper, I was a little nervous about the needle snapping in my face.

I just wanted to make sure I had enough pages for me to document our time back home.

I managed to use up some of the stuff I got from Studio Calico's Last Call!

And of course, a little envelope in the middle to hold any little bits and pieces that can't be stuck onto the pages. I used a bit of washi tape to alter a regular letter-sized envelope.

And there you have it! After an intense three days of Andrew studying and writing exams, and me trying to keep the boys occupied and the house in order, this was my much-needed crafting binge.

I love the feeling of being productive.

Superhero Themed Gifts

Nathan's friend from school is having a superhero-themed dress-up birthday party this weekend.

I find it so difficult to choose appropriate birthday gifts these days. Though we'll probably pick up a toy for him, I thought I'd make part of the gift as well.

First up, the card.

Here's the front of the card, going for a simple boyish look:

And adding a little more colour on the inside:

Next, is the t-shirt.

I needed a simple design so I drew inspiration from some old school comics. You can probably guess how I ended up choosing those colours, too.

This t-shirt took way more effort than I had planned but I'm glad it turned out alright. Hope he likes it!
