Anzac Day 2012

Yesterday was Anzac Day here in Australia.

We didn't make it to the Anzac eve concert, or even any of the dawn services. I had expected Nathan to come home and tell us all about it. After all, that's how I learned and observed Remembrance Day when I was in school. But we got nothing. All we knew was that it was a stat holiday and that meant a rare opportunity for us to spend the day together as a family, so we planned a road trip.

In the car, we listened to the radio hoping to learn a little more about Anzac Day, or at least listen in on a service, but all we heard was interview after interview with people in bush communities talking about how they idolized past servicemen. We were a little uncomfortable with that so we turned off the radio and had a discussion about the significance of days like Anzac Day instead.

The discussion lasted longer than I expected it to. We talked, and Caleb munched on an apple and before we knew it, we had arrived in Eumundi to take a stroll through the Eumundi markets.

As we drove through looking for parking, I was excited to see how big the market was. Once we got out of the car, we packed up the stroller and headed off.

We hadn't been there for more than five minutes and we had already found some good food at Baked Potatoes.

Seriously. This baked potato was good.

Now I won't tell you how much it cost, but that baked potato satisfied all four of us. Baked potatoes will definitely be making their way into our dinner menu at some point in the near future.

We snaked our way through the market stalls and soon enough, we were standing in front of the churros stand.

People, these churros were amazing. Even by themselves they were delicious, but with the dulce de luce dipping sauce? Perfection. Andrew was singing its praises all day long.

Hint for those ladies whose husbands won't go to the markets with them: Show them the food. Andrew used to moan and groan every time I asked him to go to the markets with me. He'd step on the gas pedal whenever we passed a sign pointing to farmers' markets. Then one day I dragged him along and fed him. He has gone with me willingly ever since.

By lunch time, we had finished walking the markets. It seemed like a bit of a waste to head straight back to Brisbane, so we decided to stop by Kings Beach in Caloundra on the way home. I love how the beaches here are dotted with playgrounds and picnic areas.

We grabbed a quick bite to eat (note: the fish and chips place here would not make it on my list of recommendations).

Then, we headed for the beach. It was cloudy and a little windy but that didn't stop the boys from playing in the water.

They had gotten so dirty from food and sand, we let them get wet in their street clothes and ended up changing them into their swim gear for the ride home.
