Finding Inspiration in Doing It Yourself

For my latest DIY project, I made a sewing machine cover.

With Caleb getting into everything, it was time for me to cover up my sewing machine to protect his little fingers from the pokey parts (or maybe it was to protect my sewing machine from his little fingers pulling the presser foot off!).

This was definitely the most labour-intensive thing I've made since I started sewing.

I usually sew without patterns but this time, I didn't even have guidelines to follow - I was flying solo. I just imagined what I wanted it to look like then measured and cut each piece, adjusting things as I went.

I ended up having to add a lining to the cover as well because I could see the pink on my machine through the first fabric.

After all that hard work, I didn't want to risk messing it up, but it looked really plain. So, I jazzed it up a little with some reverse appliqué action.

I'm a little addicted. Can you tell?

It's not perfect, but completing this project was definitely very satisfying.

And since it matched my little asterisk pouch so well, I now use it to store my frequently used sewing tools (i.e., needles, mini fabric scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape) so they're close by when I need them.

So what was your last DIY project? Do you have projects in mind that you can't wait to get started? Tell me about them, I'd love to hear from you!

ETA: Can you imagine how stoked I was when I discovered that my project was included in Amy Tan's post on her blog?! AMAZING!
